In this masterful new novel, set in 1950s North Carolina, the acclaimed author of The Road to Bittersweet and The Education of Dixie Dupree brings to life an unforgettable young heroine and a moving story of family love tested to its limits.
For twelve-year-old Martha “Sonny” Creech, there is no place more beautiful than her family’s cotton farm. She, her two brothers, and her parents work hard on their land—hoeing, planting, picking—but only Sonny loves the rich, dark earth the way her father does. When a tragic accident claims his life, her stricken family struggles to fend off ruin—until their rich, reclusive neighbor offers to help finance that year’s cotton crop.
Sonny is dismayed when her mama accepts Frank Fowler’s offer; even more so when Sonny’s best friend, Daniel, points out that the man has ulterior motives. Sonny has a talent for divining water—an ability she shared with her father and earns her the hated nickname “water witch” in school. But uncanny as that skill may be, it won’t be enough to offset Mr. Fowler’s disturbing influence in her world. Even her bond with Daniel begins to collapse under the weight of Mr. Fowler’s bigoted taunts. Though she tries to bury her misgivings for the sake of her mama’s happiness, Sonny doesn’t need a willow branch to divine that a reckoning is coming, bringing with it heartache, violence—and perhaps, a fitting and surprising measure of justice.

"I just received this book and once I started reading it I honestly couldn't stop. My heart ached for those kids, and anger filled my heart when it came to their mother. Although I understood her reasoning for doing what she did I was still overwhelmed with anger.
This book was so worth waiting for. The sad part is it's only her 3rd book and i've already read the other two and throughly enjoyed them also. Now I have to wait for her to write another one, and waiting for her books is so hard. She's at the top of mt favorite authors list!!"

The Forgiving Kind Donna Everhart Books Reviews :
The Forgiving Kind Donna Everhart Books Reviews
- A southern author telling a southern story. A little sad because I'm finished with the book, but it's that good of a read. Once I started, I couldn't stop.
I was hooked from the epigraph. This is my favorite Donna Everhart book yet. It's longer than the first two. The characters are fully developed and there is a true family focus rather than one or two individuals.
Donna gives all the right details to place the reader where the story occurs. Weather, plants, scents, descriptions of food, furniture, linens, customs - I knew exactly where I was for the entire book.
Sonny Creech will be a favorite of mine for a long time. - I will not be writing a summary, instead I will write about my likes/dislikes.
The voice of the narrator is completely spot on. The narrator (12 yr old girl) keeps that young innocence and inexperience in her voice throughout the novel, even when describing an adult topic she has witnessed for the first time. My favorite thing about her use of language was the ability to hear the accents and see their expressions while reading. The characters are authentic and genuine, especially for this setting (North Carolina, 1950s).
The author creates the epitome of all antagonists in this story. The emergence of the antagonist into the life of the main character and her family is deviously conceivable and unfortunate.
It was very hard not to like anything, but I can't say I was 100 percent satisfied with the ending. Not enough to take a star off or go into details about though. Definately worth the read.
Notable topics not for the weary hearted rape, physical abuse, emotional abuse, murder, Klu Klux Klan, racism, sexuality - Donna Everhart has done it again! This book tells the story of Sonny Creech and her family in North Carolina in the 1950s. We are along for the ride as they encounter bigotry and hatred in that time period and watch as Sonny's life collapses after the death of her father. This author crafts characters that are multi-faceted and she applies her understanding of human nature to all, even the antagonists, so they are human beings instead of tired stereotypes. The only thing I didn't like about this book was it ended. Can't wait to read her next book.
- I just received this book and once I started reading it I honestly couldn't stop. My heart ached for those kids, and anger filled my heart when it came to their mother. Although I understood her reasoning for doing what she did I was still overwhelmed with anger.

Now I have to wait for her to write another one, and waiting for her books is so hard. She's at the top of mt favorite authors list!! - I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was difficult to read at times but you had to keep pressing and knowing there would be a light and a twist at the end of the tunnel. I appreciated Sonny’s strength for a young girl. Also her innocence at some of the going’s on as the story unfolds. All I can say is read it and feel the characters. Like Sonny and Daniel said, “That Mr Fowler is a sumbitch.â€
- I loved loved this book. It was so good and very well written. It takes place in the fifties in North Carolina. It had me from page one. I started it at ten o clock, read until one, went to sleep and got up early so I could finish it.
- I found the book more like an adventure in human complexity. The author created a despicable male character, Frank Fowler. He created hell for the family and was eventually dispatched by a poison Pie. Fun read.
- Sad. Tragic. Children thrown into a very sad adult world.
