I knew little about Alzheimer's disease, a devastating ailment afflicting over five million Americans, and I hadn't known anyone who suffered from it. Then it became personal. My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. This is a story of our journey together during the various stages of her illness. In many ways it was not a pretty time. Yet, through this difficult experience, there were shafts of light from the One who understands all things and promises to be with us. It was His light that led me to dig deeper, furrow beneath His wings, and find His peace and strength in the storm. Through retelling personal stories, I invite you along on my journey. By sharing my close up perspective of this disease, you will enter with me into the eye of the storm, but more importantly, into the goodness of God. In the midst of the devastation of Alzheimer's, God met me with encouragement, direction, comfort, peace, and even joy. You will see that a person doesn't have to be healed in order for God to be glorified, that He's all about the journey. I experienced victory in the midst of trial, opportunities to serve when serving was a test, the ability to trust when situations were tedious and perplexing, and thankfulness when days were clouded with a heavy, oppressive fog. Overall, I found hope in the midst of loss in what became an adventure in God. I took Him at His word and was not disappointed. All glory to the Father! "But thanks be to God who always leads us in His triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place" (II Cor.214).

- I decided to read the book out of curiosity having not dealt with Alzheimers on a personal level. I found Betsy's descriptions of her struggles and the gratitude and grace God supplied applicable to the various trials He uses to refine His creatures. Her thoughtful, loving, sometimes comical yet deeply painful experience and her descriptions of God's provision warmed my heart and gave me hope for my own journey through difficult times. Looking beyond our circumstances to the blessings from above is a timeless message.

- This book is packed with important and necessary information for anyone caring for or coping with an Alzheimer's patient. Loads of resources! There is also an inspiring message of hope as Ms. Tacchella journals each stage of her mother's disease. Being a faith based book I found it spiritually uplifting, nurturing the care giver and finding peace and joy in the midst of chaos.
- I am so proud of Betsy to write such an excellent book. Encouraging, practical, spiritual. I liked every suggestion, and I liked how the author started out slowly to give attention to praying and turning to the Lord. And by the time she took the reader through all of her experience, the reader was immersed in the hope found in the christian perspective ! I would pass this onto persons with other crises and challenges, even mental illness situations, because of the truths that are woven throughout!
- Wonderful, touching book written by Betsy Tacchella. Her scriptual references and explanations can be applied in many varied situations. I heartily recommend this book.
- incredible help for some confronted by loss
- This book will help you see how to draw on God's grace as you walk with a loved one down the Alzheimer's road. Betsy does not "sugar coat" the journey. I was encouraged as I read how she "leaned hard into Jesus" with her mother's decline.
My mother battled the big " A" for over 12 years. She did not know her own children for the last 3 years. Probably the biggest jolt for me was the day she looked me right in the eye and asked, " Now who are you....you'll have to tell me who you are??" Betsy addresses those kind of heart wrenching experiences.
You will be encouraged to believe God in the worst of times. She also addressed the moments of humor which get you through the tough times. You have to laugh some times so you don't cry all the time. You won't want to put the book down until you've read it all. But you just might cry again one more time as the reality of that hard journey hits you. A good cry is medicine for the soul. This book is good medicine. - Betsy's authentic, transparent examination of the many layers of her response to her mother's Alzheimer's - adjustment, pain, loss, more adjustment, more pain and loss, still more adjustment - offers a true look at the perplexing demise of judgment, memory, speech, thoughts, and actions experienced by those afflicted with this disease.
But she doesn't leave her readers there.
As a woman thoroughly sold out to the grace of God, Betsy gently but persuasively takes her readers by the hand and leads them beside the psalmist's still waters even in the midst of incredible forfeiture and grieving. Her understanding and compassion move us past heart-numbing anxiety and mourning to the powerful, redemptive mystery of of love that truly does conquer all - divine love that provides mercy, cultivates hope, and grows faith.
This book is an important tool for family members and friends set adrift in a turbulent sea they feel unprepared to navigate. An anchor of hope, it deserves to be read, re-read, and shared as an antidote to the paralyzation that threatens to strike when the diagnosis hits mother (or whoever) has Alzheimer's.
