"You’ve probably already learned that five of the 26 letters in the Alphabet song are vowels. Undoubtedly the vowels A-E-I-O-U are right at the tip of your tongue and you can repeat them fast, fast, fast! These “vowels can make long sounds [and they] say their names.†What you probably didn’t know is that the A-E-I-O-U can also make short sounds. In this book you’ll be taking a closer look at the long vowels. Just think of the words alphabet, bake, cake, rain, train, say, and play. If you say them out loud, you’ll soon be saying words with the Long A in them. It’s really quite easy and fun to learn about these vowel critters. If you’re a young brainiac you can put on your thinking cap and get out those magnetic letters and board you used to use when you were just a little kid. Blocks will work too and before you know it, you’ll be a pro at making words with short vowels.
Let’s take a look at that last vowel, the U. The “Long U has a sound-alike word. That’s right! It’s you.†Check out the words cute, cube, music, menu, few, and rescue. Ah, that Long U sound is each one of them. Can you think of some other words the Long U is in? U, u, u, u, u, u, and u again! Learning about long vowels can be a lot of fun. Put them with some consonants, change a letter, put some letters together, trying rhyming, and there you have it ... some words that you’ve built all on your own. It’s not as hard to learn to read as you might think. How about taking a look at another long vowel!
“Long I moves in the mouth.
“Say ‘I’ and feel it go up and
“down. Long I can be spelled
“In many ways.â€
Examples:
bike like
light night
my cry
Tie pie
This is one book in the “Look! Books†series, Sound It Out, a phonics-based series of books I quickly fell in love with. Everyone has a different approach to reading, but I’m a huge phonics fan, so much so I actually used Dolch cards in the classroom. Each long vowel in this book is presented on a two-page spread. The lesson, if you can call it that, is on the left with an appealing photograph on the opposite page. Each lesson is prefaced by introducing the name of the long vowel (e.g. Long o). Children quickly learn about the sound and are encouraged to practice it via repetition. A sentence incorporating several long vowels is included along with sets of rhyming words with the long vowel underlined.
In the back of the book in the “Let’s Build Words†section children will be able to put together what they’ve learned. I do love the tidbits of humor in the pages, something that makes learning fun and interesting. The layout of the book is quite appealing and pops with brightly colored photographs and illustrations. There are many series out there, including Hooked on Phonics, but I do love the hands-on approach the book has to offer. This is the perfect series for the homeschool or classroom setting. The library bound is “8 x 8†with a solid binding that will withstand many years of use. This is a continuation / companion book of the first book in the series, Short Vowels.
