The Metallurgy of Zinc and Cadmium Classic Reprint Walter Renton Ingalls 9780266395409 Books Reviews

  • WHAT IT IS
Ingalls's "The Metallurgy of Zinc and Cadmium" is the definitive work on the zinc industry, particularly of the United States, as of about 1900.

This is a facsimile of the second (1906). For most purposes, the second edition (with nearly twice as many pages) is highly preferable to the first edition. Note that a facsimile version of the slimmer first (1903) is available from another facsimile publisher. If you want this second edition, be careful which you order.

    PUBLICATION DATES
It greatly annoys me that NABU never specifies the original publication date or edition number---apparently attempting to trick unwary purchasers into thinking that these are modern publications. (minus one star)

    QUALITY OF THE REPRODUCTION
The quality of the reproduction is very good. The text is clear, dark letters, with few extraneous marks. Line illustrations are good to very good, albeit could easily be easily reproduced better from an original copy. The few photos are of "xerox" quality---viewable, but not really very good. I found no evidence missing or damaged pages.

    BINDING
The book is "perfect" i.e., paper, bound in a thin unlaminated cardstock cover. That is, it is fine for a personal library, but would likely suffer from rough-usage (e.g., in a public library).

    CONCLUSION
I would still prefer an original to a facsimile. Note that digital copies are available from several internet sources free
