  • This is kind of one stop shop for Oracle Enterprise Manager. Will Point you in the rite direction. This book along with Oracle Documentation can make you an expert in Grid Control.

  • I got this guide about 6 weeks ago. It has already become an invaluable resource for me. One of the things I was trying to do was to architect my Grid Control in such a way that it provided High Availability. I read the docs and looked at metalink, but the information was scattered throughout the web. Instead, the author clearly indicates the steps needed to install Grid Control on a RAC database as well as how to use load balancers in front of them for the Oracle agents to communicate instead of with the OMS's directly. It was all right there in the guide in chapter 4. Who knew that Grid Control supported Fast Connection Failover via the emoms.properties file? (i.e em.FastConnectionFailover=true)
    
    The author discusses about every possible configuration for Grid Control as well as how to setup the monitoring and metrics. He then gets into security, auditing, and day-to-day maintenance and administration of GC. I don't know what I would do without this guide. It fills in all the gaps beautifully.
  • First of all, few words on the tool Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control 10gR2 itself
    ARE YOU REALLY SURE TO WANT TO SPEND LOT OF YOUR TIME to implement THIS tool ?
    what are your needs and the time you expect to spend on it ?
    are you ready to manage the complexity of this tool (OK you can manage a lot of things with it databases, hosts, application servers, etc... but this has a cost) ?
    Have you checked for other tools (Quest ?, ...)
    it is really hard to master this tool and you may have headhacks with the installation and deployement !
    the agent itself is quite big (arround 3GB on AIX for instance), very dependent on the host (have a clean /etc/hosts, the proper packages installed, ...), so having all the prerequisites OK on the target hosts is a great waste of your time, expecially if you have to follow ITIL processes (change management); my advice is to collect first all the pre-requisites status on the target hosts to be able to weight the effort and measure the progress of your work.
    
    Now, if you really want to deploy this tool, my remarks on the book itself
    As said in the title, the book deals with the implementation only, with a quite good coverage, so almost nothing is said about reports
    (which are quite poor in the standard no really performance or capacity reports), jobs, user-defined metrics
    (I agree that another entire book is needed to cover that; for instance the tables/views of the management repository is poorly described; if an editor is reading this comments I am interested in writing such a book;-)) ).
    The style is quite verbose and should be more concise; at least it contains very few errors.
    A "quick start" chapter is missing as well as chapter dealing with the silent install/software only.
    The book deals with the 10.2.0.4 version; an improved version 10.2.0.5 has now been released with quite a lot improvements (and still several bugs) and furthermore the 11g release is also available (expected to have bugs so 10.2.0.5 should be more reliable).
    In my opinion the book is not enough "project" oriented, especially if you are in an ITIL oriented company indeed, you will spend weeks or months to have it implemented in your company and if your are only a poor DBA (like me)
    and not a projet manager, you will waste your time if you are not trained to developp your projet management skills.
    For very small companies, you can avoid the agent installation on each host and manage all your databases from a single agent (the one installed on the OMS host) this is not said on this book.
    It is not explained wich files are to be removed on a regular basis.
    It is good to use the DBSNMP account for the monitoring of the databases with the agent but you should create your own credentials for your users (that can be not a DBA) this is not explained.
    The management of the standby databases requiers that the DBSNMP account be granted as DBA.
    
    This said I advice to buy this book.

  • I have used Grid Control for the last 4 years for database management and performance monitoring. There is a lot of information spread across internet and Oracle OTN website, so every time I had a problem I would Google for help. Now that I have the Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Implementation Guide, it has become my first resource to search for information related to Grid Control. The Grid Control architecture covered in the book is just right for DBAs to understand the whole picture of the product suite. It also details the Oracle version confusion. After the brief architecture overview, the book describes step by step the installation and configuration including screenshots, tips and workarounds. If you are a small shop, you find your procedure to install OMR and OMS in the same server. If you are using Grid Control to manage a large data center, you find your OEM management solution to the High Available Cluster OMS with RAC database as OMR in the book too. The tuning, backup and recovery, security, and high availability and disaster recovery advanced topics for Grid control are also covered in the book. I recommend this book to anyone who is new to Grid Control as a good starting book. Also it will be a good reference book for those who are using Grid Control in their daily job.

  • Been running OEM 10g GC for over the past 2 years for the control and monitoring of 30+ database servers and 60+ instances. The product works well, but finding a single source regarding proper tuning and maintenance has usually been painful - even with MetaLink.
    
    The book covers quite a few gaps along with both common and uncommon gotchas encountered with the workarounds needed. Already dog-eared, so it is a keeper until outdated.
