The ice is coming. It was the last thing we expected, but the world is freezing. A new ice age has dawned and humanity has been forced to confront its own extinction. Billions have fled the glaciers, crowding out the world's last habitable zones. They can run from the ice, but they can't escape human nature a cataclysmic war is coming.Â
In orbit, a group of scientists are running the Winter Experiments, a last-ditch attempt to understand why the planet is cooling. None of the climate models they build make sense. But then they discover an anomaly, an unexplained variation in solar radiation...and something else. Close to the burning edge of the sun, they catch a fleeting glimpse of something that shouldn't be there....
Suddenly humanity must face the possibility it is not alone in the universe. And the terrifying possibility that whatever is out there may be trying to exterminate us. Â

"I owe my husband a really nice dinner, because once i started reading Winter World I didn't stop. It's a riveting story and I devoured it in two days.
Riddle writes of a world overcome by snow and ice. What's causing it? That's what teams of scientists want to know so they can stop it. Each team is made up of experts in their fields, shooting off into space to see what's blocking the sun.
Because of our proximity to doom due to climate change, this story will resonate with everyone. The situations are plausible, and the characters believable.
I've already warned my husband that book two in the series will be out in a few months. I don't want to wait but it will give me time to prepare and freeze some meals for him!"

Winter World Audible Audio Edition A G Riddle Edoardo Ballerini Amanda Leigh Cobb Recorded Books Books Reviews
- *no spoilers in this review* I've been reading A.G. Riddle's books since the first one came out. I'm never disappointed. His books are always well researched and well written. I enjoy reading them because while they are clearly fiction they contain enough nonfiction elements to make it seem like yea, ok, this could maybe happen.
This book also has a deeper meaning which I picked up on maybe halfway through the book which had me reading through the rest of the story with a deeper sense than just what is on the surface. I sincerely hope that others pick up on this too. I love that this author can turn his feelings and things that are going on in his life and create a story out of them and use it to reach out to others who may be in a similar situation. Make sure to read the Author's Note at the end of the book. Buy this book, you won't be disappointed. Can't wait for book #2. - Another great book from A.G. Riddle. The book captures you from the first page and it is vitally impossible to put the book down. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
- I've read A.G. Riddle's Atlantis and Pandemic stories, which I had liked.
As someone who reads a lot of Sci-Fi and has a decent education concerning physics, this book, though, annoyed me to the point that it sidetracked me from enjoying the storyline.
Apart from some unrealistic technical achievements (the entire drone construction timeline is, IMO, impossible, same for building lots of spaceships, especially when most of the world is already under ice), what bothers me most is that the dynamics of travel in space are not understood by the author, nor have been corrected by his advisors, which leads to propagating wrong concepts to many more readers (at least, it doesn't do real harm other than miseducating them).
An example When the spacecraft is in zero-g (no acceleration) and it manipulating something outside using a robotic arm, the author talks about the high speed of the spacecraft, and implies that this would be somehow dangerous. Fac is That is nonsense, as in space, any speed is only relevant relative to some other object. There's no resistance, and if the robotic arm lets go of the handled object, it would just stay in place. There is simply no speed effect. It would have been better not to mention the "speed" at all, thereby avoiding the propagation of misconceptions.
Similarly, the book ignores the dynamics involved in moving spacecrafts freely through space as well. It simplifies it to the level of walking, as if one could easily stop, change directions, etc. All without thinking about acceleration and its effects (i.e. gravity).
There's more but I made my point The story is fine (though, after just having read the excellent "Three Body Problem" trilogie, it's a bit bland in ideas), but the "realness" in it is terrible. - I enjoyed immensely the spellbinding story and the masterful weaving of science and drama.
While some of the ‘tech’ seems a little more advanced than our current abilities (or maybe not ... the government seems to always have Some advances in science that they have yet to share) it is a plausible story line that showcases both the fragility of our physical existence and the will to prevail and fight in our human nature.
Riddle’s depiction of their alien attack and our resolve at a defense is exciting and hard to put down. My only negative point is that book two is not yet ready! I wasn’t ready to leave the story. - Great read! An exciting ride from the first to the last page ... I'm anxiously waiting for the next adventure from Mr Riddle!
- James Sinclair is a medical doctor and a bioengineer specializing in robotics. He is a one-of-a-kind genius who also happens to be in Federal prison for the rest of his life.
Emma Matthews is a geneticist and a crew commander of the International Space Station.
Both become valuable contributors on a dangerous mission to find out what's blocking the Sun and throwing Earth into the next Ice Age.
I was surprised by this book. I guess I didn't read the blurb thoroughly enough. I thought this book was mainly going to be post-apocalyptic about the Earth freezing over. And it was - but that takes a backseat to the space saga. Probably at least 2/3 of this story takes place in Space or preparing to go into Space.
I was okay with the sci fi space story. I enjoy these types of books also. The book was well written and had plenty of brave, selfless characters. The story was full of "tech talk" as the intrepid adventurers strive to save Earth.
Another thing I didn't notice was that this is the first book in a two-part series. It had a fine ending and could be a standalone in my opinion. But a second book THE SOLAR WAR is due out June 25, 2019.
If you enjoyed the disaster movies THE CORE and ARMAGEDDON, I am sure you'll enjoy this tale. - I owe my husband a really nice dinner, because once i started reading Winter World I didn't stop. It's a riveting story and I devoured it in two days.
