With Father in Washington and Cuffy, their housekeeper, away visiting a sick cousin, almost anything might happen to the Melendy kids left behind at the Four-Story Mistake. In the Melendy family, adventures are inevitable Mr. Titus and the catfish; the villainy of the DeLacey brothers; Rush's composition of Opus 3; Mona's first rhubarb pie and all the canning; Randy's arrowhead; the auction and fair for the Red Cross. But best of all is the friendship with Mark Herron, which begins with a scrap-collection mission and comes to a grand climax on Oliver's birthday.

Here is Elizabeth Enright's classic story of a long and glorious summer in the country with the resourceful, endearing Melendy bunch.

Then There Were Five is the third installment of Enright's Melendy Quartet, an engaging and warm series about the close-knit Melendy family and their surprising adventures.

Then There Were Five Melendy Quartet Elizabeth Enright 9780312376000 Books Reviews

  • This is a series of 4 books that I bought for my grandson's Christmas gift 2017. I decided to read them first and just started book 3 "Then There Were Five". They are chapter books and perhaps a little difficult for an 8 year old but so what. Written in 1949 but not dated. Each chapter is a mild morality play about sharing, kindness, friendship, sacrifice. I only read non-fiction but I find these four books grown up and intelligent. If you have a bright kid or two in your family, these would be good gifts.
  • The adventure continues! When I first read this book, I wondered if by this point the Melendys would be starting to get kind of boring. But they didn't! This story is completely different from the others and absolutely delightful!
  • Great series for children as a night time read-a-loud or to get children interested in reading alone. Great story line and so authentic to childhood and children's thoughts. Allows children to just be children and shows the healthiness of this.
  • This has been one of my favorite books since I was about eleven.
It is set in the country in World War II Ameica but there is not a war focus. The children in the story are all interesting individuals, from the oldest, a young teen-age girl, to the youngest, an eight-year-old boy. The focus is on the young people and the plot revolves around their using their creative imaginations and practical resources to solve their problems. The adults in the story are likeable and real, not didactic.
  • My nine- year-old grandson and I read together every morning on Skype. It is his bedtime in China. We loved the Melendy Quartet and Spiderweb for Two, too. Highly recommended. Though the stories take place in the 1940s, my grandson understood the children's feelings and enjoyed the adventures. They have a general appeal. I am a former children's librarian who read these books in the 1950s and loved them, too. Susan Beck
