Mastering Fair Isle knitting has never been easier!
Fair Isle knitting may look complicated, but knitting expert Lynne Watterson lays out the basics in a way that is easy to follow and understand. She starts with an overview that covers everything from the best types of yarn suitable for Fair Isle patterns to beginner knitting techniques. Also included is a primer on how to read Fair Isle charts, plus an illustrated step-by-step guide to Fair Isle knitting showing complete beginners how to hold the yarns, strand across the back of knitting, link colors in, and how to weave in ends.
The main chapters feature a selection of beautiful Fair Isle stitch patterns. Each pattern contains clear instructions in both written and chart form, and these are cross-referenced to a comprehensive guide to abbreviations. A variety of simple, stylish projects included in each chapter demonstrates ways to use the beautifully shaded Fair Isle patterns―from chic accessories and the latest fashion looks to colorful cushion covers and cozy blankets. Bonus material offers a variety of stunning finishing touches that can be used to enhance your knitting―including beads, buttons, tassels, cords, fringe, and more.

"Lynne Watterson has written a fairly comprehensive review of fair isle knitting that covers step to step techniques, easy to follow stitch patterns and projects to get you started. It is published by St. Martin's Griffin, a very reputable knitters' press.
The first chapters are about the book: yarns, choosing colors and knitting kits.
Next come basics such as casting on, knit and purl, binding off, increasing, decreasing, gauge, circular knitting, weaving, charts, etc.
She then tackles patterns, focusing on stitch guides. She covers corrugated ribbing, seeding and two projects: a child;s cardigan and a child's hoodie. Next projects are fair isle bands, fingerless mitts, hot water bottle cover, beret, and leg warmer, along with hat and scarf.
Lesson 19 is fair isle patterns: Mug cozies and pot holder, bag, throw, and pillows.
The end of the book goes through ways to block and press, seam, adding beads, tassels and pom pons,
The book ends with aftercare essentials which are very important for wool, especially fair isle. Ms. Watterson lists everything one will need for fair isle knitting including the yarn that is needed for each of the projects.
My only criticism of the book is that the colors photographed are rather drab and there are so many ways to make fair isle bright and colorful. Other than that, it is a good book, one that I'm happy to have in my library."

- I love the look of colorwork in knitting, but the idea of working with multiple strands of yarn at once makes me think I"m going to weave myself some sort of a web and get stuck in it. This book simplifies the process and offers great photos and some good beginner patterns to take some of the mystery out of the technique. As I expand my knitting skills, this will be a key resource in my library of knitting books.
- This book is exactly what I hoped it would be when I ordered it, and then some. Yes, experienced knitters don't need the introductory matter that explains the basics of knitting...but this isn't for experienced knitters. This is for people like me, with some knitting skills and limited experience, who want to learn the basics of stranded knitting. Along the way, Watterson also supplies information on knitting jogless stripes, ways to perfect horizontal as well as vertical striped ribbing, blocking, finishing, adding beads and buttons, and making and attaching tassels and pompoms. The diagrams and written instructions are clear and consistent, the charts are easy to read, and the designs are illustrated with swatches. The whole effect is to make knitting with more than one color look like something even I could master.
The patterns are just icing for this cake, but very nice icing attractive and useful items that build on the skills Watterson teaches. The index, bless the hearts of everyone involved in this book, is thorough.
Excuse me--I think I'll go knit some legwarmers now. - This was a bit too easy for me. I was hoping for some guidance on how to weave in all those annoying loose ends and how to plan out increases on the yoke of a top-down sweater while maintaining the fair isle. Or perhaps some more detailed information about color choices. Or yarn weight, fiber and spin. What kind of yarn is best for fair isle? This book won't tell you.
- This book is WONDERFUL, I was so confused with the technique (especially because I had to read the color chart, so many little squaresssss), but in this case the chart is written! (ok, this might seem pretty dumb but for me this was a big deal). In any case the book has amazing patterns that can start you up on the technique. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to knit fair isle and hasn't been able to because of the technique's complexity.

It's very well-written, and has great instructional illustrations. I am a novice at Fair Isle knitting, and it's done a lot to get me oriented in the mindset necessary, plus having good info about the needed skills. The illustrations and photos are very helpful indeed.
I do wish that there were more very small projects included, maybe with several different colorways- because Fair Isle depends so much on the yarn colors, and the same pattern can look vastly different depending on its color choices, as the book illustrates; I just wish it had more examples, especially of sets that had more than 3 colors.
I really love all the patterns pictured and graphed! It would be interesting to knit the legwarmers in 3-4 colors, changing them with every repeat of the same pattern.
I am just edging my way into Fair Isle, and this book is an excellent resource. - Great book, although I haven't done much fair isle, it certainly is a good book to explore & create with.
- I wanted to learn Fair Isle, so I bought this book as well as another one. This is by far the best of the two. There are many different patterns, not only hats and scarves, but a pretty decorative throw. The number of charts is fantastic.
