• In graphic novels, the visual images can and sometimes do trump (suddenly a hot button word!). the human qualities of the tale. Not so in "The Plane Story." Here, the picture panels serve to amplify the potent emotional story line that Kevin Sacco spins out. His multi-generational family saga, which is apparently mostly true, is suffused with big historical events ranging from the ghastly carnage of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire to the political ugliness of the McCarthy red-baiting years. Yet all are part of a son's heartfelt narrative of a life full of surprises, not least of which is his discovery that his mom is not his birth mom, and the reunion and tragedy that follows.
  
  About those visuals For starters, Sacco is a master of perspective. Five hundred years ago, he'd have rated a pat on the head from Brunelleschi himself. We see what's happening from overhead, behind, and down low. There's a life-changing conversation between father and son, for example, which we evesdrop on from the seat behind them in a first class airline compartment. The positioning made me feel like I was in that rear seat, leaning forward to listen to that heavy conversation in the next row. And then there's the very first panel in the novel. Linger on it, and you'll be tuned into how stylish people dressed in 1978. And what they drank and snorted, too. I recently watch Vinyl, the HBO mini-series about the drug and alcohol-crazed music business exactly in the time frame of that first panel. I had to endure a lot of raunch, verbal and behavorial over those hours, yet I didn't learn any more about the era's style from Vinyl than I did from that very first panel of "The Plane Story."
  
  As a kid, I read comic books constantly. My first favorite was Donald Duck, especially when Scrooge McDuck figured in, cavorting joyously in his money piles. My father insisted that I read Classic Comic Books, which put the world's best novels in visual form. Then I stopped reading comics for many a decade--more than six, in fact. What goes around, comes around, truly, because now I'm back to being glued to the page--the drawn page. For that pleasure, thank you, Kevin.
• Everyone has a story but only a few of us can tell it as well as Kevin has in The Plane Story. Reading his story was as entertaining as any story could ever be. After this book you are going to want pictures accompanying everything you read. The art is fantastic and the emotions of the characters jumps right off the pages! As a matter of fact, every element of this book works and makes The Plane Story a wonderful experience. In this format, of a graphic novel, it was refreshing to see the hero be heroic without punching someone out but by rolling with the punches.
• Reading this book and taking it all in gave me one of my most wonderful days so far of 2011. I couldn't put it down. What a joy and a wonder that someone, Sacco, could sit down, dream such a thing and then execute it to such startling and fresh perfection. Along the way there are lessons to be learned, but they are never preachy and always delivered in the most charming and bittersweet package. The drawings alone pull you in and are worth the price of admission. Please treat yourself to a most inventive and unusual experience. Don't miss this one!
• I actually won this book in an online blog contest and it was better than I could ever imagine. Mr. Sacco's writing and illustrations are incredibly engaging and the overall story is nicely told. I look forward to reading the authors next few works. I will be recommending this book to all of my friends. Even if you are not a avid comic book fan this book is well worth picking up.
