Division Leclerc The Leclerc Column and Free French 2nd Armored Division 19401946 Elite Merlin Robinson Thomas Seignon Raffaele Ruggeri 9781472830074 Books Reviews
- In the dark days after the fall of France in 1940, a few intrepid officers dared to defy the collaborationist Vichy regime and take up arms anew against Nazi Germany. Among these was Captain Philippe de Hautecloque, forever after known by his nom de guerre of Leclerc. Leclerc rallied to De Gaulle's Free French forces, and was sent to French West Africa to organize its liberation.
Leclerc had an outstanding record of leadership and audacity in West and North Africa, becoming the commander of the Allied-equipped French 2nd Armored Division, which would participate in the Normandy and the liberation of Paris. Authors M.P. Robinson and Thomas Seignon have the story in this concise but fascinating Osprey Elite Series book. The narrative follows Leclerc from the fall of France, and the 2nd Armored Division from its creation in North Africa, through the liberation of Paris and the final defeat of Nazi Germany.
The book includes a terrific collection of period photographs and modern illustrations. Of note, the photographs and illustrations capture the varied sources of uniforms and equipment for the 2nd Armored Division. Also of note, the authors capture the role of the Spanish Republican soldiers who cast their lot with Leclerc from the very beginning. Well recommended as a highly readable introduction to the topic. - As the title states, this is a good read about the Free French 2nd Armored but I thought that the writing was not as crisp as some of the other books in the Elite series.
- Interesting subject great writing
- thank you
