They seem to come from another universe! They don’t clean up after themselves. Their rooms are a disaster. They rebel against doing anything with the family. They come home late, sleep late, and show up late to places they are supposed to be. And worst of all, when you speak with them, they seem unable to hear your voice, even when their earbuds aren’t plugged in. What’s a parent to do? The ages of 13-16 are some of the hardest times for a parent to navigate. Parenting from the Periphery will give you some ideas you can use immediately to improve the way you relate with your teens and help you assist them in the exhilarating and painful process of becoming an adult.Dale W. DePalatis leverages his own parenting experience – successfully raising three kids into adulthood – and his 25+ years of high school teaching to help you better parent and connect with these "alien" creatures living under your own roof.

- As a grandparent of 7, two in their teen years, this book brought back memories. As my husband and I muddled through those teen years, we had no idea what we were doing. This book would have been a valuable tool.
It was only during our third child's teen years that I came to the realization that my "controlling nature" did not bring good results. I switched tactics. We parented our third child from the periphery and it worked well.
This is an excellent resource for parents and grandparents. It will help them see their teen, physiologically, mentally and emotionally.
Great practical suggestions. Highly recommend it. - As a 25-year-old young man, I write this review mostly as someone who has been a teen not so long ago Dale’s book is jam-packed with exceptional advice.
My parents followed a very similar strategy to the one described in Parenting from the Periphery, and looking back now I see how crucial this approach was to my own growth and to the upbringing of my siblings.
I believe that when we treat a teen with the respect we show for other adults - we encourage the kid’s growth in an elegant, kind, and effective way. In most cases, this can be done only from the “periphery†of parenting, and Dale illustrates this concept in a way that feels like I’m talking to a long-time friend.
I had a fabulous time reading Parenting from the Periphery, and I feel I will return to it many times in the future - not only for the practical advice but also for the vibrant kindness that fills every single page.
Thank you, Dale! - Fantastic book! I've got a 13-year-old and an 11-year-old, so I will definitely be putting Dale's advice into action. I've been having a lot of trouble with my 13-year-old, who is struggling to take control of his life by basically ignoring everything adults tell him. I've already started putting Dale's tips into practice. These are tips I probably would not have thought to try myself, but looking back at when I was a teenager, I can see how they'd be effective.
- This conversational book encourages parents of adolescents to build relationships with their children based upon respect and age-appropriate responsibilities. Rather than abdicate their roles, parents are given tools to guide their offspring from immature children into productive adults. Very well-written and realistic!

- This book targets to adults who struggle to deal with teenagers. As a mom of two, though they are still toddlers, I feel it is never to early to get equipped and bought this book. Surprisingly I found it is so helpful! It changed the way I think as well as I talk, not only to my kids, but to other teens as well. Highly recommended and this book is easy to read/digest!
- As a mom to 4--3 teenagers and 1 tween, this book validated my chill, hands off approach to parenting. My home is not a free for all--we have expectations and boundaries based on our family values and respect. Dale and his book gave me permission to enter into this next phase of child rearing and season of my life with ease and peace.
- This book is a helpful resource for parents or teachers looking for ready-to-use advice for relating with the teenagers or preteens in their lives. It includes relevant research, personal insights, and humor which makes for an engaging read. I have a young child, and I am glad to have gained skills to parent “from the periphery†in my parenting toolbox before we begin the next leg of our journey together!
