Examples Explanations Intellectual Property Fifth Edition Stephen M McJohn 9781454850151 Books Reviews
- The one strength of this book is that it covers the 2011 America Invents Act and there are currently no other books that really do so. But that strength is heavily undercut by the multiple errors and typos all over the book. This book was clearly rushed to publication.
Many "example" questions, for example, will ask two questions how would this come out under the 1952 Act and how would this come out under the 2011 America Invents Act. They answer the 1952 Act, but from time-to-time forget to answer the second part of this question. It's like they didn't properly check to see if they updated all the answers from the previous edition.
There are silly typos with dates, but a close reading of dates is critical in the Patents Act, so that's a frustrating thing to make mistakes on. (e.g. 2013 is repeatedly mistyped as 2103 in the sections dealing with the 2011 America Invents Act).
In short, I am disappointed with the purchase and do not recommend this book. The E&Es are hit-or-miss. This one is patently a miss (no pun).
As more books come out covering the 2011 Act, I recommend looking to those alternatives. This book gets two stars instead of one since there are a few good questions about the 2011 Act, even if the answers are not all there. - I normally use E&E for study aids. Shipped fast and is very helpful. It covers every area of IP (trade secret, trademark, copyright, patent) which is very helpful for my intro course. The examples are why I always pick this book over other study aids.
- This is a top-notch book if you have questions about intellectual property. It gives examples and scenarios as well as the law. Highly recommend. I gave this as a gift to a blogger friend who was concerned she may be infringing and did not want to get into legal trouble. I learned about this book when taking a class at ASU, it was the required textbook.
- Solid overview of the points being made. Thorough, but not too wordy.
- It's a good book. Suggestion Have actual case name by the legal principals / theories.
- Overall, the layout of this E+E is great, and most of the answers can be found with ease. However, the index is lacking, and more alarmingly, typos in the text actually give the wrong answer. For example, anyone who studies Copyright Law will know that the CCNV v. Reid court found that the sculpture was not a work made for hire. But on page 114, the book states exactly the opposite. Now, reading the context of the statement and the following explanation will show that it the sentence was clearly a typo, but regardless, errors like these are unprofessional, and could cost law students their grades. So be aware.
- This book does a good job in explaining the basic concepts and covering all the areas for an IP introduction course. But if your professor loves policies, then this book might not be the best choice.
- EXCELLENT
